What the visa is and who it is for
Plataforma ONE says that the Digital Nomad Visa grants a one-year permit to reside and work throughout the national territory if you wish. It adds that the procedure is for foreign nationals who wish to carry out remote work or professional activities for companies located outside Spain, using exclusively computer, telematic or telecommunications means. It also says that the procedure is also for foreign nationals who perform salaried work for companies located outside Spain. The same page says that foreign nationals who carry out self-employed activities as freelancers may also work for companies located in Spain, provided that the percentage of such work does not exceed 20% of their total activity. It adds that the visa must be collected in person or by a representative within a maximum period of 1 month, starting from the day after the favorable decision is notified.
Requirements
- The applicant must not be in an irregular situation within Spanish territory and must be over 18 years of age.
- The applicant must have no criminal record in Spain and in the countries where they have lived during the last two years, for offenses under Spanish law.
- The applicant must have public or private health insurance contracted with an insurance company authorized to operate in Spain, although no proof of insurance is needed when there is a prospect that the foreign national will be covered by the National Health System, due to registration with Social Security as a result of an employment contract or a professional relationship, and for entrepreneurs whose activity will not start immediately, insurance policies with limited validity, such as travel insurance, are accepted.
- The applicant must have sufficient financial resources for themselves and their family members during their stay in Spain.
- The applicant must pay the fee for processing the authorization or visa.
Documents
- The passport must be valid for at least 1 year and have two blank pages, and passports issued more than 10 years ago are not accepted.
- A company certificate must state, for salaried workers, the employee's length of service of not less than three months and the company's express authorization for remote work.
- A certificate from the Commercial Registry must show the company's incorporation date, which must be not less than one year ago, and the type of activity it carries out.
- For teleworkers the financial resources are an amount representing 200% of the minimum interprofessional wage (SMI) per month.
- A graduate or postgraduate degree from a recognized university, vocational training institution or reputable business school is needed, or documents proving a minimum of three years of professional experience in similar roles to the position to be performed as an international teleworker.
- It is necessary to apply for a Foreign Identification Number (NIE) at the same time as the visa.
Steps
Plataforma ONE lists four steps and says that the applicant downloads, fills out and signs the national visa application form from the Embassies and Consulates page of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation.
It adds that the fee is paid at banks, savings banks and credit cooperatives.
It also says that the applicant must request an appointment at the Consular Office, and the visa application must be submitted in person, although exceptionally and for justified reasons it may be allowed through an accredited representative.
The same page says that from the notification date, you have only one month to collect the visa, otherwise the visa will be canceled.
The residence permit after arrival
Plataforma ONE says that the residence application for digital nomads is for applicants who are in a regular situation in Spain and gives a permit for 3 years, or shorter depending on the employment contract provided if its duration is less than three years. It adds that the fastest resolution time for the residence application is 20 business days.
